The earliest stage of Rosacea – erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea is characterised by a tendency to easy flushing, associated with a high red colour on the face/ cheeks. The red face is usually associated with a sensation of stinging/ burning. This is an extremely difficult stage of Rosacea as far as treatment is concerned.

However recent studies have suggested that a drug called Brimonidine used in the treatment of Glaucoma (as eye drops), when applied on the skin, can help reduce the redness and symptoms associated with Rosacea (by about 30%). The mechanism of action seems to be primarily due to the ability of the drug to constrict the blood vessels in the skin. Side effects are reported to be minimal.

It is early days yet, as this is a relatively new treatment that needs to stand the test of time. However, it provides hope to millions of Rosacea patients worldwide.
