The most common causes of itchy spots on the skin include conditions like Scabies, Eczema, Insect bites, Lichen planus, Papular Urticaria, etc. One doesn’t usually associate Psoriasis with itchy spots. Psoriasis usually presents as large, red scaly patches and plaques on the scalp, knees and elbows etc. The patches are unsightly but not usually itchy or painful.

Itchy Spots- PsoriasisHowever, the authors of this paper published on the cover page of the most recent issue of the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, describe an extremely rare variant of Psoriasis called ‘Follicular Psoriasis’, which they say can present as itchy small spots. I personally do not quite agree with their diagnosis as they just lumped the diagnosis into what best fits! Similarly there are a number of skin diseases for which a proper diagnosis can not always be given. One greatest virtue one can have as a Dermatologist, is to acknowledge and admit to it, when one does not know 🙂
