What is Rosacea? Is 'Rosacea' the same as 'Acne Rosacea'?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that usually affects people over the age of 30. The name is sometimes uses synonymously with ‘Acne Rosacea’, as the condition can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from acne, particularly in younger people. The exact cause is unknown but it is believed that hormonal changes in the body, make the blood vessels in the skin engorge, leading to episodes of repeated facial redness/ flushing experienced by people. Sunlight exposure, spicy foods and alcohol are known to trigger repeated flushing episodes and worsen the condition. With repeated attacks, this causes permanent expansion of the blood vessels on the face, leading to what is called telangiectasia (prominent, dilated blood vessels). This may lead to problems with a red face.What are the symptoms of Rosacea?
‘sensitive’ at this stage. Over time as the disease progresses, one would notice acne like pus filled red spots on the face which can sometimes feel tender. An itchy face is not usually a symptom of Rosacea and is more consistent with a contact allergic dermatitis.
I have spots on the chin, diagnosed as 'Perioral Dermatitis'. Is this the same as Rosacea?
Some people suffer with spots on the chin and around the mouth, when it is called 'perioral dermatitis'. This is supposed to be a variant of Rosacea, but is primarily caused as a reaction to various cosmetic products on the skin. Do remember that red blotches in the face can also be caused by contact dermatitis, lupus and a number of other diseases. Facial rashes are of various types and not all diseases are the same.
