Seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff are related conditions. Dandruff is the term used to describe a dry (but greasy), flaky, itchy scalp disease, not associated with hair loss. People with balding are usually not affected as the disease primarily affects the hair bearing areas. This is usually caused by a yeast infection called malassezia.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is the term used to describe a dandruff like rash affecting areas other than the scalp, commonly including the eyebrows, beard/ moustache area, sides of nose, genitals/ groin and occasionally the upper chest and back. Dry flaky skin on the face is the commonest presentation. This is essentially dandruff affecting the non-scalp areas of the body and is associated with a bit more inflammation in the skin. Excessive alcohol intake and some diseases like HIV/Parkinson’s disease can make Seborrhoeic dermatitis much worse.
