Plastic surgery options are great for those who wish to alter themselves physically, enhancing their features to better fit their ideal of beautiful. With the nature of surgery, however, some patients suffer scars that don’t heal well, growing into deep marks that do nothing to flatter their appearance. The risk of scarring needs to be taken into account when making the initial decision, but be assured that there is plenty you can do to minimize and eliminate scars once the surgery is over.
It’s important to keep in mind the stages that your scars will go through. There are three phases: inflammation, proliferation, and maturation. The inflammation period lasts for the first ten days, and this is a time where you should protect your scarring as much as possible. The proliferation period is when the blood flow increases and most of the healing can begin. This is the ideal time to begin taking steps to help the scar heal quicker. Once your scar has reached the maturation stage, it will become clear how badly the scar has solidified, and from that point you can decide how drastically you’ll have to address the scar removal.

  • Silicone sheeting and gel: The sheeting comes in a form like plastic wrap and can be wrapped around the afflicted area to protect the scar from the elements. The gel does essentially the same thing, but is easier to apply on certain areas. Ask your surgeon about what stage of your scars maturation is best to begin this application.
  • Massage: Some clinics specialize in massage to help scars heal quicker. It’s important to alleviate tension in the area around the scar, but must be done by a professional to be truly effective. It’s also important to wait until the staples or other bonding has been removed/settled.
  • Microdermabrasion: Once your scar has healed, you can try consistent microdermabrasion treatment. This exfoliation technique has been used successfully to get rid of acne scars, stretch marks, and plenty other types of scarring.

  • Laser light treatment: This is a pretty successful operation for scar removal, but can be a little more expensive. It takes about three to seven tries to get the best results, but is non-intrusive and will not harm the surrounding skin.

It’s also important to keep in mind the different scarring consequences that come with different procedures. If you’re opting for a rhinoplasty and are worried about scarring, you could opt for a closed procedure (one that is done up through the nostrils) rather than an external open procedure.
After a procedure, make sure you take proper care of your skin. You’ve put a lot of money and energy into becoming your most beautiful self, and you don’t want to throw that all away because you neglected to help your scars heal. And before you go out and get a cosmetic procedure, make sure you know what that’s going to entail and ultimately do for your body. Surgery is always an invasive measure, and unless you can bare your scars proudly, you may want to be careful.  Choose a surgeon with experience and the ability to help you through your scarring, like Dr. Jeffrey D Hoefflin.
